All Voices Need To Be Heard

June 26th, 2019

When people with different perspectives and backgrounds come together, new alliances can create change across institutions and communities. Former Civic and Community Engagement Director David Wertheimer recently joined MIT Professor Cesar McDowell and graduate student Ayushi Roy for a wide-ranging discussion about building relationships that create lasting impact.

In the podcast, All Voices Need to Be Heard: Unlikely Allies at MIT and Gates Discuss Democracy & Community Engagement, David talks about human centered design, the foundation’s community-driven grants, systemic inequities and how their symptoms can be healed, but that these don’t always affect the root cause—especially when the cause is structural racism, gender inequality, and extreme income inequality.

MIT Professor Cesar McDowell and grad student Ayushi Roy speak to public life as defined by our relationships to each other, engaging with folks at the margins, the complexity of demographics, and the importance of inclusive decision-making.
